From the Mendeleev periodic table to particle physics and back to the periodic table
We briefly describe in this paper the passage from Mendeleev's chemistry
(1869) to atomic physics (in the 1900's), nuclear physics (in the 1932's) and
particle physics (from 1953 to 2006). We show how the consideration of
symmetries, largely used in physics since the end of the 1920's, gave rise to a
new format of the periodic table in the 1970's. More specifically, this paper
is concerned with the application of the group SO(4,2)xSU(2) to the periodic
table of chemical elements. It is shown how the Madelung rule of the atomic
shell model can be used for setting up a periodic table that can be further
rationalized via the group SO(4,2)xSU(2) and some of its subgroups. Qualitative
results are obtained from this nonstandard table.Comment: 15 pages; accepted for publication in Foundations of Chemistry

Amplitude and phase representation of quantum invariants for the time dependent harmonic oscillator
The correspondence between classical and quantum invariants is established.
The Ermakov Lewis quantum invariant of the time dependent harmonic oscillator
is translated from the coordinate and momentum operators into amplitude and
phase operators. In doing so, Turski's phase operator as well as
Susskind-Glogower operators are generalized to the time dependent harmonic
oscillator case. A quantum derivation of the Manley-Rowe relations is shown as
an example
Gravitational Wave Spectrum in Inflation with Nonclassical States
The initial quantum state during inflation may evolve to a highly squeezed
quantum state due to the amplification of the time-dependent parameter,
, which may be the modified dispersion relation in
trans-Planckian physics. This squeezed quantum state is a nonclassical state
that has no counterpart in the classical theory. We have considered the
nonclassical states such as squeezed, squeezed coherent, and squeezed thermal
states, and calculated the power spectrum of the gravitational wave
perturbation when the mode leaves the horizon.Comment: 21 page
Quantum evolution across singularities: the case of geometrical resolutions
We continue the study of time-dependent Hamiltonians with an isolated
singularity in their time dependence, describing propagation on singular
space-times. In previous work, two of us have proposed a "minimal subtraction"
prescription for the simplest class of such systems, involving Hamiltonians
with only one singular term. On the other hand, Hamiltonians corresponding to
geometrical resolutions of space-time tend to involve multiple operator
structures (multiple types of dependence on the canonical variables) in an
essential way.
We consider some of the general properties of such (near-)singular
Hamiltonian systems, and further specialize to the case of a free scalar field
on a two-parameter generalization of the null-brane space-time. We find that
the singular limit of free scalar field evolution exists for a discrete subset
of the possible values of the two parameters. The coordinates we introduce
reveal a peculiar reflection property of scalar field propagation on the
generalized (as well as the original) null-brane. We further present a simple
family of pp-wave geometries whose singular limit is a light-like hyperplane
(discontinuously) reflecting the positions of particles as they pass through
it.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
Charged hydrogenic problem in a magnetic field: Non-commutative translations, unitary transformations, and coherent states
An operator formalism is developed for a description of charged electron-hole
complexes in magnetic fields. A novel unitary transformation of the Hamiltonian
that allows one to partially separate the center-of-mass and internal motions
is proposed. We study the operator algebra that leads to the appearance of new
effective particles, electrons and holes with modified interparticle
interactions, and their coherent states in magnetic fields. The developed
formalism is used for studying a two-dimensional negatively charged
magnetoexciton . It is shown that Fano-resonances are present in the
spectra of internal transitions, indicating the existence of
three-particle quasi-bound states embedded in the continuum of higher Landau
levels.Comment: 9 pages + 2 figures, accepted in PRB, a couple of typos correcte
Nonequilibrium Evolution of Correlation Functions: A Canonical Approach
We study nonequilibrium evolution in a self-interacting quantum field theory
invariant under space translation only by using a canonical approach based on
the recently developed Liouville-von Neumann formalism. The method is first
used to obtain the correlation functions both in and beyond the Hartree
approximation, for the quantum mechanical analog of the model. The
technique involves representing the Hamiltonian in a Fock basis of annihilation
and creation operators. By separating it into a solvable Gaussian part
involving quadratic terms and a perturbation of quartic terms, it is possible
to find the improved vacuum state to any desired order. The correlation
functions for the field theory are then investigated in the Hartree
approximation and those beyond the Hartree approximation are obtained by
finding the improved vacuum state corrected up to . These
correlation functions take into account next-to-leading and
next-to-next-to-leading order effects in the coupling constant. We also use the
Heisenberg formalism to obtain the time evolution equations for the equal-time,
connected correlation functions beyond the leading order. These equations are
derived by including the connected 4-point functions in the hierarchy. The
resulting coupled set of equations form a part of infinite hierarchy of coupled
equations relating the various connected n-point functions. The connection with
other approaches based on the path integral formalism is established and the
physical implications of the set of equations are discussed with particular
emphasis on thermalization.Comment: Revtex, 32 pages; substantial new material dealing with
